A CLEARER WAY TO REVIEW

Compare document versions.
Keep every change in context.

Diff Anything is a free online document comparison tool for reviewing two versions of your text. Compare a draft with an edited copy, check a revised project brief, or inspect updates to a service agreement. Start with files or paste text directly into the comparison boxes above. No account is required.

The result is a structured change list: added, removed, modified, and moved text blocks. Select a change to see the original and updated wording with word-level highlighting. Use the Numbers filter to review changes involving prices, dates, percentages, or durations. This filter draws attention to numeric edits; it does not determine their business or legal significance.

How to compare two documents

  1. Add the original. Choose a supported document or select Text and paste the first version.
  2. Add the updated version. Use the second box for the document you want to check against the original.
  3. Compare and review. Filter the change list, search for a phrase, and select an item to inspect its source.
  4. Export your findings. Download the full change list as CSV or Markdown, or copy the report for your review notes.

For example, changing “Subscription: $29 per month” to “Subscription: $39 per month” produces a modified-text entry with the before and after values. Try the sample service agreement above to explore the complete workflow.

Supported document formats

TXT and Markdown
Compare plain text and Markdown source, including punctuation and changes to the markup. Rendered Markdown appearance is not compared.
Microsoft Word (.docx)
Compare extracted text. Images, styling, comments, and tracked-change history are outside this preview’s scope.
PDF · experimental
Compare text-based PDFs with selectable text. Scanned pages require OCR, which is not supported. Columns, tables, and changed line wrapping may introduce extraction differences.

Each file can be up to 10 MB. This preview accepts up to 100 PDF pages, 1,500 text blocks, and 250,000 characters per version.

Document comparison questions

Are my documents uploaded to a server?

No. Document text is parsed and compared locally in your browser. This version does not store your files or comparison results on a server, and it does not send document content to an AI model. Reloading or closing the page clears the comparison. The website itself is hosted by Cloudflare; serving the site involves ordinary web requests. No analytics or error-reporting SDK is installed in the app.

Can I compare Word and PDF files with each other?

Yes. Supported files are converted into text blocks before comparison, so the two inputs do not have to use the same file format. Different extraction or line wrapping can create extra differences, especially when one version is a PDF. Always check important results against the original documents.

Does this tool detect changes in meaning?

No. Diff Anything currently uses deterministic text-matching rules, not semantic analysis or AI. Whitespace is normalized, while case and punctuation remain visible. Similarity-based pairing is heuristic and may pair blocks imperfectly. The tool shows textual evidence; you decide what a change means.

How are moved paragraphs identified?

Matching text blocks are aligned before their relative order is compared. This helps distinguish moved text from simple insertions that push later content down. Repeated paragraphs can have more than one plausible alignment. A moved entry means the extracted text is unchanged but its relative position differs.

Is comparison and report export free?

Yes. The current preview is free to use, including the Numbers filter and CSV and Markdown exports. Exports include all detected changes and source locations, even if you have filtered the list on screen. There is no account, subscription, or cloud history in this version.
